Every year, over 130,000 students come to Canada to study. To do so, they must get a study permit issued by the Canadian government. This license, a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), enables students to study in Canada for a temporary period and typically indicates the educational institution they are attending and course of study. To pass, an applicant must fit a particular set of requirements.
Eligibility requirements
To be suitable for faster processing in the Student Direct Stream, you must:
- Be a legal resident living in one of the following countries:
- China
- India
- Pakistan
- Philippines
- Vietnam
- Senegal
- Morocco
- Have an approval letter from a post-secondary designated learning institution
- Reside outside of Canada when you apply
- Have proof that you have given your tuition fees for your first year of study
- Have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAN$10,000
- Take a medical exam before you apply (if applicable)
- Get a police record before you apply (if applicable)
- Have your most recent secondary or post-secondary school record(s)
Student must appear for the English Language test (IELTS / TOEFL / PTE) :
- English Language Test is the initial requirement before the student applies for college application and visa application.
- Based on students’ English test scores, they can apply to get admission to college or University.
- The IELTS requirement under the SDS Program is a minimum of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0 in any module.
- Students have to present all the records that help them get the best program according to his/their qualification; this covers the following documents:
- Passport
- Student permit/status document, if already in Canada.
- IELTS Test Score Card
- Mark sheets of tenth grade
- Mark sheets of twelfth grade
- Bachelors Mark sheet (if you need one)
- Masters Mark Sheet (if you need one)
- Work experience related documents (if you need one)
Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)
A GIC is a Canadian investment that has an assured rate of return for a set period. Many banks offer GICs. The bank that provides you with the GIC must:
- Prove that you bought a GIC by giving you 1 of the following:
- An Investment Directions Confirmation or
- An Investment Balance Confirmation
- A letter of attestation
- A GIC certificate
- Have GIC in an investment account or a student account that you can’t access till you land in Canada
- Make you verify your identity before they issue any funds to you
- Give the funds to you by providing:
- A primary lump sum once you identify yourself upon entry in Canada
- The rest of the funds in monthly or bi-monthly installments over 10 to 12 months
General Category
Who can apply:
- All countries except Vietnam, India, China, Pakistan, or the Philippines can apply for a student visa under the General category.
- Students from India, Pakistan, Vietnam, China and the Philippines who don’t qualify under the SDS program can also apply under the general category.
- The student requires solid proof of financial background.
- The other general student visa application conditions are the same as the SDS category: English Language Test, Admission process Completion (LOA, Tuition Fees), GIC, Medical, and Biometric.
