  • Who can sponsor

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their loved ones residing in Canada or outside Canada through Family Sponsorship Class. Bringing families for reunification is the key to making the country prosperous and more robust.

As an individual applying for a Family Sponsorship, you should :

  • Be a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner.
  • Be dependent on children, including adopted who are 21 years old or under
  • Be parents or grandparents.
  • Be an eligible relative.

People under these categories are eligible for sponsorship:

  • Spouse: lawfully valid marriage in country of origin and under Canadian law
  • Common-law partner: At least one year of constant cohabitation in a marital relationship
  • Conjugal partner: Conjugal relationship for at least 12 months where the couple is prohibited from living together due to immigration barriers, religious reasons, sexual orientation or marital status (e.g., married to someone else, where separation is not possible in the country of origin)
  • Same-sex relationships: considered valid for immigration purposes below these categories

Canada’s Family Class immigration section lets Canadian citizens and permanent residents sponsor their parent(s) or grandparent(s) in the Parent and Grandparent Program or PGP. As a result, sponsored parents and grandparents become permanent residents of Canada, with all the benefits that come with it. This includes the freedom to live and work in Canada without limitation on location, time, or sector, as well as access to publicly-funded health care and other services. Eventually, sponsored parents and grandparents may become Canadian citizens.

The sponsor and the sponsored person(s) must sign a sponsorship agreement that:

  • Commits the sponsor to give financial support to the sponsored person(s) and any other eligible families accompanying them for a period of three to 20 years, based on their age and relationship to the sponsor, starting on the date they become a permanent resident; and
  • States that the persons becoming permanent citizens will make every attempt to support themselves.

Canadian residents and permanent citizens may be qualified to sponsor if they meet this criterion:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or are listed in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act. Canadian citizens living abroad must demonstrate to IRCC that they intend to live in Canada with their spouse once their partner becomes a permanent resident.
  • Be a permanent resident and must be residing in Canada to be eligible to sponsor.
  • Be able to demonstrate that they are not taking social assistance unless they have a disability.
  • Be able to provide for the monetary needs of the sponsored person.

How can we help?

Although the government prioritizes the procedure of sponsorship applications, being successful is by no means a given. You must meet all the requirements, and even the slightest slip on an application can lead to a refusal. To benefit from this great opportunity, people should get a legal expert who understands how to package an application to give an applicant the best chance to be sponsored. At JFS Immigration, we know what immigration officers are scanning for when assessing a sponsorship application. We have served people successfully to get Canadian permanent residency through family sponsorship, and we can help you!
